Major contributions to quality teaching and research were celebrated within the University of Southampton’s Faculty of Physical Sciences and Engineering at its annual Dean’s Awards.

Dean Professor Bashir Al-Hashimi highlighted the Faculty’s strategic plan for sustainable excellence as 18 individuals and teams were commended for achievements spanning the departments of Electronics and Computer Science, Physics and Astronomy and the Optoelectronics Research Centre.

The Dean's Awards were presented at an esteemed summer reception event in the Faculty’s Mountbatten building on Wednesday 26th July. Awards for Early Career Excellence recognise exceptional contributions that have been made in a variety of Faculty-related activities whilst those for professional services or technical & experimental staff recognise significant performance or contribution to the Faculty.

“Our staff’s excellent work places us in a strong position to deliver quality and drive more success in the future,” Bashir said. “Three years into my term of office, I remain fully committed to creating a vibrant environment for academic success, based firmly around the Faculty’s outstanding and internationally-recognised departments and institutes.”

Award winners were nominated by colleagues for exceptional contributions to Faculty-related activities. There were 16 individual prizes presented on the night alongside two team awards for the Faculty’s Research and Innovation Services team and Electronics and Computer Science’s Technical Teaching team.

Professor Sir Christopher Snowden, President and Vice-Chancellor, added: “The Faculty of Physical Sciences and Engineering has made considerable progress over the last three years, based on the foundation of strong leadership at all levels and collegiate contributions across all departments. The Faculty is well-positioned to deliver for our future with high-quality students, dedicated staff and a strategy for success.”
